Binovum

Binovum is a prescription only drug available to sexually active women between the ages of 18 and 35 who are looking for an easy to use, and highly effective way of preventing pregnancy. Binovoum has been also prescribed to women diagnosed with endometriosis or related symptoms; pelvic pain, heavy and/or irregular bleeding. This will only be an alternative solution if your GP deems it necessary.

You can not use Binovum if you suspect that you’re pregnant or if you are breastfeeding. This method contraception may also be unsuitable for women with the following conditions:

• Chorea
• Severe depression
• Heart or circulation problems
• Liver problems such as liver tumours or jaundice
• Diabetes, high cholesterol or high blood pressure
• Vaginal bleeding of an unknown cause
• Migraine or severe headaches
• Sickle cell anaemia
• History of cancer
• History of kidney problems
• Varicose veins
• Blood clotting

Binovium comes in a 21-day pack consisting of two colored tablets, one white, the other a light shade of orange. The seven white tablets contain 35 micrograms of ethinylestradiol and 500 micrograms norethisterone, while the 14 orange tablets have 35 micrograms ethinylestradiol and only 1 mg of norethisterone.

Binovum works by preventing the release of eggs from the ovary. The hormones used in this combined contraceptive pill may also change the lining of the uterus which makes it difficult for an egg to develop. Binovum also increase the thickness of vaginal fluid making it harder for a sperm to reach an egg for fertilisation to happen.

Tablets in the Binovum blister pack must be taken orally, and exactly as instructed. Take a white tablet for the first 7 days, and then continue with the peach-colored tablet every day for 14 days. After the total of 21 days, stop for 7 days simply to allow your body a rest period. During that time, due to the reduced level of hormones in your blood, it is likely that you will experience a bleed similar to your period.

Minor side effects are perfectly normal and may occur during the first few weeks of using Binovum. They include; fluid retention, nausea, increases in blood pressure and spotting. Some women using this pill may be prone to changes in weight and/or behaviour.

In cases of extreme discomfort or when prolonged side effects occur, please contact your GP immediately so that appropriate measures can be taken.
