How does Champix work?

Champix's active ingredient varenicline works on the brain the same way that nicotine does. It works to stimulate the nicotine receptors to reproduce the similar nicotine-like pleasure smokers get from smoking, which works to alleviate any withdrawal symptoms you may experience when you stop smoking.

Champix also works to prevent any enjoyment being taken from cigarettes and nicotine, and does this by blocking nicotine from acting on the brains nicotine receptors by strongly binding varenicline to them. This means that the smoker will no longer experience the pleasurable feelings they used to get from smoking. If they succumb to the temptation to smoke, it will not be as enjoyable as before and this in turn prevents any chances of a relapse from occurring.

Is Champix clinically tested and proven to work?

The efficiency of Champix (varenicline tartrate) in smoking cessation was demonstrated in five double blind, placebo-controlled clinical trials in which 4190 chronic cigarette smokers (10 or more cigarettes per day) received varenicline. The study results showed a 44% success rate of smokers taking Champix, 30% taking bupropion, and 12% taking a placebo.

What is the recommended dosage of Champix?

For the best results in giving up smoking with Champix you should carefully follow your doctors instructions regarding which dose will work best for you. Below is the standard Champix recommended dosage:

Treatment Duration Recommended Dosage
Days 1-3 0.5mg once daily
Days 4-7 0.5mg twice daily (morning & evening)
Days 8-End of treatment 1.0mg twice daily (morning & evening)

If you experience any intolerable side effects, your doctor may lower your Champix dosage either temporarily or permanently. You should start taking your Champix treatment a week before your 'quit date'.

Who should not take Champix?

You should not take Champix, if you have any of the following conditions:

  • If you are allergic to varenicline or any other ingredients
  • If you are taking any nicotine replacement therapies, such as patches, gums, inhalers
  • If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant
  • If you are a lactating mother
  • If you are below 18 and above 65 years of age
  • If you take insulin, asthma medicines, blood thinners or any other medications
  • If you have kidney problems (dosage adjustment is necessary)
