How does Champix work?
Champix affects nicotine receptor, which is thought to be related to smoking addiction. Varenicline in Champix affects this receptor in two opposite ways: 1) it acts like a version of nicotine and gives nicotine like pleasure and 2) it blocks actual nicotine from cigarette to bind to the receptors as varenicline binds to it more strongly.
Champix can help relieve the craving and withdrawal symptoms associated with smoking cessation. If you take Champix, you will experience lesser withdrawal symptoms and face lesser cravings.
Is Champix clinically tested and proven to work?
The efficacy of Champix (varenicline tartrate) in smoking cessation was demonstrated in five double blind, placebo-controlled clinical trials in which 4190 chronic cigarette smokers (10 or more cigarettes per day) received varenicline. The study results showed 44% success rate of Champix, 30% of bupropion, and 12% placebo.
What is the recommended dosage of Champix?
To optimize the success of your trial, you should follow doctor’s instruction carefully. Following is the standard recommended dosage of Champix:
| Treatment Duration |
Recommended Dosage |
| Days 1-3 |
0.5mg once daily |
| Days 4-7 |
0.5mg twice daily (morning & evening) |
| Days 8-End of treatment |
1.0mg twice daily (morning & evening) |
If you experience any intolerable side effects, your doctor may lower the dosage temporarily or permanently. You should start taking Champix dosages a week before your 'quit date'.
