Cilest is a combined oral contraceptive pill highly effective in preventing pregnancy. It is also used to treat female health disorders such as Endometriosis, troublesome periods and PMS. Cilest may also provide a certain amount of protection against ovarian and endometrial cancer.
Cilest protects against pregnancy by releasing two synthetic hormones into the body, ethinylestradiol (35 micrograms) and norgestimate (250 micrograms). These mimic the naturally produced female sex hormones, oestrogen and progesterone, which are responsible for causing an egg to be released from the ovaries (ovulation) for the possible fertilization by a male sperm, and for preparing the womb’s lining for pregnancy.
The daily dose of synthetic hormones in Cilest trick the female body into believing that ovulation has already occurred, therefore preventing ovulation each month, so no eggs are available to be fertilized. The hormones in Cilest also cause the mucus in the cervix to thicken, making it difficult for sperm to reach the womb to fertilise an egg and alter the quality of the womb lining, making it difficult for a fertilised egg to be implanted.
Cilest is approximately 98% effective if taken correctly. Please ensure that you read the leaflet in the packet and abide by the instructions, as well as ensuring that you are aware of what makes Cilest less effective such as diarrhea and sickness.
